David Mellard
P.J. Wasilchak
In 1980 David Mellard placed fourth in his age division during the annual Cooper River Bridge Run. Twenty years later, in 2000, he again took home honors from The Bridge Run; placing second in his age category. Six years after that, Mellard again completed The Bridge Run.
For over twenty years, Mellard showed the dedication and passion that embodies every runner as they cross over the bridge. It was this passion that has led to the induction of Mellard into The Cooper River Bridge Run Hall of Fame.
Mellard won the Dewey Wise award, given to the eldest Bridge Run runner who ran a time faster than his or her age in minutes, on several occasions. He was a graduate of The Citadel Military College and a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army. His accomplishments as a runner expanded beyond the Bridge Run, as he competed in the Boston Marathon.
David Mellard passed away on May 11, 2011. The North Charleston resident will forever be remembered for his dedication and determination showed on the bridge during each spring. Whether the conditions for the race were intolerably humid, drenching rain, or a perfect morning … David Mellard will be remembered covering the 10-kilometer race in victorious fashion.
The Bridge Run is truly honored to induct David Mellard into the Hall of Fame.
