How We're Making the Bridge Run a Green Race
Karen Hauck

For over ten years, the Bridge Run has been concerned with reducing its footprint on the local environment by providing recycling and waste removal services throughout race festivities. Last year, staff and board of the Bridge Run expanded its environmental efforts with the introduction of the USB drive drive and brought on-board two new environmental partners, Sonoco Recycling and
Fisher Recycling. Together, with the assistance of the City of Charleston’s Department of Parks, the Town of Mt. Pleasant’s Public Works and countless volunteers from the Alzheimer’s Association and other community groups, the run collected and processed 7,780 pounds of trash and more than 30,000 pounds of recycling (plastic bottles and cardboard).

NEW THIS YEAR
Composting: Sonoco Recycling and Fisher Recycling will introduce composting during the post-race festivities in Marion Square. Paper goods, fruit peels, bagels and other non-meat food items will be collected in composting bins that will be placed alongside recycling and trash receptacles. The purpose of the composting program is to capture more materials thus limiting the amount of waste delivered to the landfill.

Digital Passport: Similar to last year, the Bridge Run will provide each participant with a USB flash drive that includes all pertinent information related to the race. Sponsored by Boeing, the Digital Passport will incorporate the on-line magazine, virtual goodie bag, and much more.

HOW YOU CAN HELP?
* Register on-line
* Before and after the race, be sure to dispose of your waste in the appropriate receptacles. Recycling will be available throughout the Expo, as well as race day at the starting line and throughout Marion Square.
* Volunteer! We’re always looking for volunteers to help with the recycling/clean-up effort. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact the Bride Run office.
