Irv Batten
Kristin Wolfe

The name of Mount Pleasant’s running specialty shop, On the RUN, describes its owner, Irv Batten, perfectly. Irv first came to South Carolina on a track and field scholarship to the Baptist College of Charleston (now Charleston Southern University) and has been ‘on the run’ ever since. Irv’s love for the sport has only continued to grow over the years and he tributes that to the characteristic unique to running that not only allows you to compete against others but also yourself. Irv is a fixture in the running community and spreads his passion of the sport to others through various outlets.

Irv is the Race Director of the South Carolina USA Track and Field meet, the South Carolina USA Track and Field Youth Chairman, a USA Track and Field certified official and he was also the President of the Charleston Running Club for 4 years. Irv has also had great success as a coach. He has coached individuals of all ages in everything from 800 meters to the marathon. He has also lead several people to the Cooper River Bridge Run’s Marcus Newberry Award over the years.

Being a two-time Marcus Newberry Award Winner himself, Irv knows the amount of hard work, dedication and motivation it takes to place so high in a race of such magnitude. Irv says that the Cooper River Bridge Run “is THE race in South Carolina and one of the top races in the nation. The competition is tops!”

Irv embodies everything the Bridge Run aims to promote: physical activity, a healthy lifestyle, community involvement, and helping others. Irv says that “it has been and always will be a joy to help others reach their goals and I want to pass the passion I have for running to others.” The Cooper River Bridge Run is honored to induct Irv Batten into the Hall of Fame.
