Running With A Purpose
Paul J. Wasilchak

The Cooper River Bridge Run has established and maintained several objectives since the inaugural race in 1978. These objectives are to increase cardiovascular exercise in the community, raise funds for public education on the importance of exercise, and generate a spirit of community involvement and volunteerism. To further bolster the importance of these objectives and help support local non-profit organizations, the Cooper River Bridge Run established a grant program in 2006.

The goal of the program, to increase participation and physical activity in relation to education, gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “running with a purpose.” From government entities to local schools, grants ranging from $500 - $1,500 are awarded to non-profits in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.

The fund is supported by The Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina. Since then, recipients of the award have emphasized public awareness of the importance of regular physical exercise, provided opportunity for regular physical exercise, and increased the opportunity for participation in The Cooper River Bridge Run.
